THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TAX WEDGE, UNEMPLOYMENT AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS IN OECD COUNTRIES

ABSTRACT

Taxes have an impact on both unemployment and foreign direct investments. As a matter of fact, while the increase in taxes on the labor force affects unemployment and foreign direct investments negatively, the decrease in foreign direct investments also negatively affects employment or unemployment. In this context, the aim of this study is to investigate the causality relationship between tax wedge, unemployment and foreign direct investments for the period of 2000-2019 in OECD member countries, by panel FMOLS method and Dumitrescu-Hurlin (2012) causality tests. According to the results of the study, there is a bidirectional relationship from tax wedge to unemployment, and a unidirectional relationship from foreign direct investment to unemployment. However, no significant relationship was found from the tax wedge to foreign direct investments. However, when Panel FMOLS test results were evaluated on a panel basis, it was revealed that there was a positive relationship between unemployment and tax wedge, and a negative relationship with foreign direct investments.
